MARIST MODEL UNITED NATIONS XXXVII

Conference Structure

Topical Committees

Every delegate is assigned to a topical committee. During topical committee meetings, delegates craft a resolution for their topic. Later, these resolutions will be introduced and debated by the General Assembly.

The following are the Topics for the 37th Marist MUN Conference:

  1. CRISPR Technology

  2. Gender in Sports

  3. Preparing for the Next Pandemic

  4. Water Wars

The purpose of the Topical Committee on CRISPR Technology is to investigate the present and past aspects of this innovative gene-editing tool, known as CRISPR. The significant discoveries from its 1987 discovery to its varied uses by 2022—including successful clinical trials for the treatment of genetic diseases—will be examined by the delegates. Critical issues such unforeseen disability, uncertain future repercussions, and ethical controversies will be discussed by the committee. It will also look at international laws and viewpoints, showing how different countries in China, Mexico, the US, Japan, and Canada tackle different issues. Navigating CRISPR’s promise while guaranteeing moral and acceptable worldwide application is the main objective.

The issue of gender in sports has been a prominent topic of debate in recent years, as societies grapple with ensuring fair competition and inclusion of all athletes regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. There are complex biological, political, and social factors to consider in balancing women’s rights, transgender rights, and the integrity of competition. By taking on “Gender in Sports” as a committee topic, the Marist MUN aims to have thoughtful discussion on this issue from different national perspectives. Delegates will have to consider the various challenges countries face in developing policies that promote both fairness and inclusion. Additionally, they will discuss the actions of international bodies like the IOC, UN Women, and OHCHR in trying to set human rights-based standards. Overall, debating “Gender in Sports” allows the committee to have an insightful simulation of real-world negotiations on this nuanced issue between states with differing priorities and viewpoints.

Examining past and present global preparedness for pandemics, the Topical Committee on Global Pandemic Preparedness aims to learn from the COVID-19 pandemic in particular. Delegates discuss issues related to the economy, misinformation, and shortages in medical supplies while putting a focus on preventative actions. The committee deals with matters such as international cooperation, efficient communication, and workforce stability. Important nations like Bolivia, Canada, India, the US, and China provide insights. The necessity of coordinated global action—highlighted by the UN through programs like the High-level Meeting, International Health Regulations, Global Humanitarian Response Plan, and funding for meeting immediate medical needs and promoting recovery—makes the matter relevant.

Water wars are defined as battles between nations for access to important water resources for economic and political reasons by this topical committee. It examines the historical and geopolitical ramifications of water scarcity, emphasizing the connection to global challenges such as poverty and hunger. The article emphasizes the UN’s critical role in resolving water-related issues, citing recent initiatives such as the 2023 Water Conference and UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme. By highlighting the ongoing work of UN institutions such as the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization, the research highlights the current need for concerted initiatives to lessen the far-reaching impacts of global water wars.
